Energy Saving Tips
- Keep all registers open and clear of any obstructions.
- Keep all windows and doors closed. A closed door will block cooling and heating loss.
- Do not run the kitchen and bath exhaust fans longer than necessary.
- Keep all heating and cooling filters clean.
- If you have a fireplace, be sure the damper is closed when not in use.
- Constantly adjusting the thermostat only makes the unit work harder. Set your thermostat at 65-68 degrees for heating and 75-78 degrees for cooling. Do not place lamps, TV sets or other heat-producing devices near a wall-mounted thermostat as this may cause inaccurate temperature readings.
- When cooling:
- Use heat producing appliances minimally and early in the morning when possible.
- Keep lighting to a minimum. Three-fourths of the electricity used by an incandescent bulb becomes wasted heat -- not light.
- Avoid long, hot showers as they add heat to your home.
- Close draperies or blinds to keep the sun's heat out of your rooms.
- Use a fan instead of the air conditioner when the weather is mild. Also, use a fan when the air conditioner is running to keep the room air moving--you will stay cooler.
- When heating:
- Open draperies and blinds to let the sun in.
- Set the thermostat as low as comfort permits. Each degree over 68 degrees can add 3% to the energy needed for heating.
- People generate heat. Lower the thermostat a degree or two when expecting a large group of guests. Otherwise your home can become overheated.
- Run only full loads in the dishwasher and washer/dryer.
- Repair leaking faucets promptly. A steady drip of hot water can waste many gallons per month and the energy used to heat it.
- Preheat oven only when necessary. Most foods will cook satisfactorily without preheating.
- Use medium-weight aluminum cookware with tight-fitting covers and flat bottoms that cover the burners completely.
